The Guthi is a system that has been part of the Newar social system in the Kathmandu Valley since the 5th century BC. The Guthi system is a trust, whereby land is donated to this trust. The government of Nepal brought Guthi bill that intended to take ownership of the guthi—traditional community trusts—when the real owners are Newars.
On June 26, 2019, the government was forced to withdraw the Guthi Bill.
