An interaction with the Indigenous youths was held on 18 December 2021 in Khumaltar, Lalitpur. The objective of the interaction was to train the Indigenous Youths on Indigenous Peoples right to self-determination and land territories and resources in particular.
Key provisions of ILO-169 and UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples including legal and constitutional provisions that are linked to lands were discussed in the interaction.
The participants shared the numbers of cases of land rights violations committed by development aggression and asked a series of questions for remedy. Advocate Bim Rai and Advocate Durga Yamphu who facilitated the interaction suggested the legal provisions and procedures and strategies for lands defense.
In addition, the Special, Protected and Autonomous region that is provisioned in the constitution of Nepal and Local Government Operation Act.2017 for the socio-economic and cultural development of Indigenous Propels was discussed in detail and encouraged the participants to strengthen the IPs advocacy to self-determination.
Mr. Hemanta Kumar Rai, chairperson of Youth Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (YFIN) Nepal, shared the vision, mission and programs of the organization and urged the Indigenous youths to come together to defend the collective rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The program was jointly organized by YFIN and LAHURNIP.
