August 9, 2025 LAHURNIP is honored by the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) for its 30 years of unwavering dedication to promoting and defending the rights of Indigenous Peoples in Nepal.

The recognition was presented during a national event in Kathmandu commemorating the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Hon’ble Mr. Prithvi Subba Gurung, Minister for Communication and Information Technology, handed a Letter of Appreciation to LAHURNIP Chairperson, Advocate Dinesh Kumar Ghale. On the occasion, the Minister also expressed his commitment to support and uphold indigenous rights in his official capacity.

LAHURNIP has been at the forefront in championing Indigenous lands, identity, and self-determination in Nepal.

One of LAHURNIP’s key achievements is the recent Supreme Court ruling (2025) in LAHURNIP et al. vs. Office of the Prime Minister et al., where the Court directed all levels of government to align laws and policies with ILO Convention No. 169 and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). This ruling has raised new hope for Indigenous Peoples in Nepal.

“Verdicts mean nothing without action,” said Chairperson Ghale. “We must continue the struggle—with unity, purpose, and power.”

The day was marked by urgent calls to translate the Supreme Court ruling into effective action.
